These pictures are for an exhibition entitled "A Fast, Bright Dust". The exhibition title is from a text by Anne Carson about Mimnermos and her translations of the fragments we have of his writing. She says "what streams out of Mimnermos' suns are the laws that attach us to all luminous things." I was considering this at the same time I was reading about current physicist's theories of the rays of the sun carrying information within them. These thoughts combined with a longtime fascination with representations of the Egyptian god Aton to create this series of paintings. The linear elements of these pictures are drawn with pure gold over spectral fields. The color, remiscent of light spectra visible from the window of an airplane over the arctic north, is made by confronting my usual palette for primary colors (lapis lazuli, cinnabar, and naples yellow) with titanium white, which pushes these historical pigments into new territory.
